We all know that Moodle is just a tool and it is how it is used that will transform learning in the classroom. What does best practice looks like?

A number of schools in Hong Kong are using Moodle or are considering using it. I have created a Moodle Ning http://hkmoodle.ning.com which will help us share ideas and organise Moodle Moots

Paul, when you came in with Chris the other week you asked about the 5 things that ESF could do to suport 1-2-1 implementation. I have given this some thought which I'd like to share with you some of which I now you have already been made aware of. These are not in any particular order of priority...

1. A much simplified mechanisms for software purchasing across whole curriculum areas (such as the science example I know you talked to Jonny Horner our Head of Science about).

2. A strategic decision on learning platform to support 1-2-1 lesson preparation and resource access.

3. A coordinated response to digitising video so that this media can be streamed from a media server (I think this might have to be a media server per school).

4. 1-2-1 lesson examples and schemes of work in most subject areas.

5. Time/money to set up a project based mentoring system whereby individual teachers are given time within their teaching allocation to support lesson development and materials production for digital 1-2-1 lessons and suppor colleagues to embed practice.

I think that this last one i the most important. We have a lot of time and money spent on training but it is a fact that very little of that training gets embedded into practice. From some work I did last year the figure I know was shockingly low - something like only 15%. You need to have a system of support in place that gets through that show and tell, initial enthusiasm but which then gets subsumed through everyday life at school. I aslo think that by funding this through reducing contact time makes it seen as valued and therefore desirable and aspirational by teachers. I suppose what I'm saying is that this training model should be to create a learning technologies trainer role within schools that individuals apply for. They are expected to work with colleagues on projects that are curriculum based and centred around producing outcomes that support 1-2-1 inquiry based approaches. I've banged this out very quickly but I'm happy to talk to you about this more.

I used to have a list of primary school librarians but I need to update it. There is a high level of staff fluctuation in primary school libraries so it’s hard to keep in touch with them all. Some of them never come to librarians’ meetings. I will try to contact them, but I don’t think they have online subscriptions because of their small budgets.
